Anthems

I should go without to be with you

dear friend

a blankness in disposable light behind

that curtain of my senses, my

ever ready ego

to enter into still, and find

calm

without ever resorting to fanfares

to strident renditions of blood pumped air

that are coarse and stained by the victims

their residue of wailing from mothers whose wombs

have been torn. their love disinterred

No, not for me a fanfare

no grand show and no jostling of elbows

no jingoism

just the hum of the commonplace. the listening

for quiet spaces and shadows

where love lurks without intentions

Take me to the river

Take me to the river. pic for poem.

blown down centuries unseen

the rivers limit

the rivers keen

a finger in the pie

of this island that is home

she swells with the tide

as she rides her natural imperatives

and recedes to reveal her banks and shores

with the incessant strip-tease of our lady, The Thames

all memories dissolved in the turmoil of constant change

but she is as modern as the craft

who take their pleasure upon her

whose oars slice the silken surface

making cuts for progress that heal

in the swirls between the stitches of strokes

just as propellers screw her waters

into a vortex of energy

soon spent in froth and heaving swells

that slump upon the banks

but it is not as if she doesn’t care

for the truth is as prosaic as her habits

she is a witness without conceit

rising and falling in continual prayer

for history to unfold with virtue

Hampton Ferry

Hampton Ferry

Hampton Ferry

An ancient tale

Will travel between the banks

Of England’s most famous river

And here, at Hampton

The ferryman still plys his trade

Oblivious to ghosts and superstition

His transport now is much the same

In that he transfers passengers

And denizens of faraway places

From side to side

And we, the inheritors of now

Indulge ourselves with modern coinage

To perpetuate this ritual

And ruffle the waters

As citizens who find pleasure

In short trips

A film on The Green

Night visions

Night visions

What does the night evoke?

A placid moon

Raptures on The Green

When atmosphere surrounds the scene

And this man made detail

With sounds and vision

Is a shared spectacle

Gathering a charm under stars

To do outside in the elements

What we mostly do in theatres

Where the mind is cocooned

And comfort comes with a ticket

But here they go Al Fresco

And the better for it

Because community breeds peace

So we may all return

When the vision has been packed away

Grass remains

A communal space to play

Casual thoughts and foot-prints

On familiar soil
