Always

Always. pic for poem

All visions are, as dreams

elided by the sting

of disappointment

They find horizons hemmed by lesser men

who languish at the frontiers

of all I ever wished for

so,

I glimpse perimeters

always

and know that I am contained

within this spirit world

of bloodsurge and ego

peeping at the possibilities

that sustain hope yet

always

a constraining hand will

by its’ magic

clench and keep me shy

of all that light

That Promised Land

always

Bully Boys Brag

Bully Boys Brag

All of it, the wished for song

of air squeezed and compressed to utter

chants. Those tribal, primal, screams

that seek to possess

to claim victory

and leave an image, a semblance

of superiority like musk on a jungle trail

or the laments of survivors over

their dead

Those chosen ones who somehow contrive

to vacuum the air of remorse

as they swell in their putrid vanity.

Those purely muscled men strike poses

and raise flags over a smoking wasteland

claiming victory

already succumbing to inertia

Their fat arses on a bed of hungry weeds

feeding that strident song

it’s notes looping away on collapsing thermals

of bravado

in the laying down of new mown history

uncertain in its fledgling state

The stench of power

The “justified” abuse contrives

to be respectable

whilst the losers scrape to find

some solace in whispered prayers

Snap shots

snap-shots

Black lips. Pierced nose. Camouflage

The blank look. A tattoo on one thigh

The tube blandly transports

a tall blond in black tights

a couple with northern accents

and their chubby children

Who all,

rattle on unseen commands. Impervious

to that bow-tie on a scrawny neck

Those men in black jackets and their conformity

who look stark

against

all of it. A thoroughfare of humanity

thinking, blinking, clinking in this concertina

The smell of, the pulse of it all

unstoppable but corked

All of us. Rare breeds

enjoined to wander in pursuit

of some desire

The clock dictates with stern authority

how we should behave

pursue our leisure

and misbehave

because that face is complicit. Scornful

having seen it all

And my friend in Cairo sits

in a cafe below a full moon

not estranged from all of this

Simply surrounded by

sand.

Boundaries

Frontier.jpg

A fingerprint of light

nestles in the shadows between cracks

of the slats of wood that mark

A boundary. The marker of territory

And into that imposter, that insouciant glow

alights a butterfly. All white

A peace envoy

Settling for an instant in that pool

before leaving like a ghost

into the alphabet of space

around that zone

And away again unknowingly

into some imagined intolerance

all the while oblivious

Content to carry

that white flag flapping

in perpetual hope.

Alpha Bet

A sign of passing time

I scrabble for words

To mark significance

Because this day is a gun

That starts one whole New Year

Take aim and breathe

Seek the rhythm

That comes with age

Blood pulsating in the sleeve of me

Amazed still that newness counts

Out-shining the past

Which comfort and fear

Would like to arrest

Step forward and go

Beyond this

And tease out the letters

That form my DNA

Immersion

Drown softly in your learning

Drown softly in your learning

Let me fall into your rhythm

To sleep-walk in your  form

Absorb your very nature

And be so patient

That something will occur

A wash. A kiss

The soft breath of concern

Gifted like a glove and fist

That have found peace

Confused by mercy

So harmony might take residence

In common sense

And the rise and fall

In the chest

Of any sentient man

Chorus

Vital Signs

A chorus

I wake early on tangled sheets
To hear the clamorous rancour
Of crows darkly calling
‘We are. We are.’
All guttural threat from securely held territory
Their certainty. Their belligerence
Reminding me of war mongers
Politicians on podiums
And electorates too timid
Or too stupid
To complain
How the world order seems fragile to me
It has disturbed my sleep
So I wonder if softer words
Can be sent to march
Cast upon zephyrs
And made to influence
Minds that celebrate harmony
Prone to extract the ‘r’ from friction
And become characters in a global book
To hum and sing
Forget to shout
‘We are. We are’
As a territorial threat
But a hymn
For it could even be
A lullaby
